https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSTYDuvz1v4 Starting with a march from Lokmacı/Ledra street and arriving at Selimiye Square, the 6th Anti-militarist Peace Operation Concert was a celebration of the year-long struggle against the militarisation of the Cypriot society, gathering hundreds of activists from all over the island, and beyond. The artistic programme included a spectacular dance performance by Studio 21, songs by young musician Koralp, a conscientious objection statement, a round of poem recitals (Brecht, Hikmet, Galeano, and with Halil Karapaşaoğlu and Gürgenç Kormazel reciting their own work), and of course the emblematic Bandista from Istanbul with their highly political music that stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Anti-Militarist Peace Operation movement since its inception. https://www.
This Thursday at 14:00, 13th of August, Haluk Selam Tufanlı and Hilmi Hami, are summoned in front of north Nicosia's Martial Court to be tried for their antimilitarist conscience and their refusal to serve the armed forces. Militarism is essentially the weaponized devaluation of the life of “Others”, and as such it threatens anyone who deviates from the societal norm.
The European Court of Human Rights has accepted Murat Kanatlı's request to examine violations of the rights to liberty, fair trial, and freedom conscience committed by the Turkish Republic. The case was submitted on April 6th and it was admitted this Wednesday, to be heard on a later date.
Erman declared his conscientious objection on 1st June. His statement follows. I am Erman, I was born in 1990 on one side of this divided island. The sad story of this island has started a long time before I was born and maybe it will continue for a longer time after I die. People like me have grown up with the hope of the peace in this divided island. In the schools, with our family and talks with friends, in the books that we read we have grown up with the fear of our ‘enemy’.
In a society where all different categories of people must fit into boxes so that capitalism can sell them customized products we proudly remain queers. Queers are constantly under surveillance because they don’t fit into binaries, they deviate from the norms, because their very existence disrupts the patriarchal system; therefore they must be disciplined, they must be punished Last Saturday, starting at 16:30 from Nicosia's Faneromeni Square, the 1st Queer Street Party —a radical initiative of groups and activists from all over the island and abroad— reclaimed both the streets of gentrified Nicosia Old Town and the Pride Parade.

When we participated in calling this year's march for a Demilitarised Nicosia, we accepted the compromise of using a UN Regulations-bound establishment, Home For Cooperation, for the sake of holding an open inter-communal and inter-sectional discussion on battling off militarism in Cyprus, which directly affects us residents of Nicosia, and Cyprus as a whole. Our intention is to foster a continued, horizontally organised forum that will reclaim what is rightfully ours: an island free of armies and the poisonous ideology they enforce on all...
Our statement on the demilitarisation of Nicosia, as faq: The auspices of militarism and nationalism are nothing strange to our everyday lives. We encounter the waving flags as we drive past a school, a church, roundabouts, mountains, to the remnants of a military post stationed in the middle of the old town centre of Nicosia.
Call made by Assembly for a Demilitarised Nicosia on facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/718230014959390/ Why is there a border dividing this city? Do we really want to harm each other? Were we ever as different as they taught us to be? This city wasn't divided because of the different languages we spoke; it was a power struggle between competing elites.
