The stakes are high, but still too low Call from Beyond Europe for the transnational Camp in Chalkidiki – 18th-25th August 2015 OXI to capitalism! From the moment it was announced the referendum in Greece seemed to hold great symbolic meaning, something that was confirmed by both the result and the reactions that followed: The ‘no’ was not solely against the granting of another loan with the usual reform conditions of the EU.

Erman declared his conscientious objection on 1st June. His statement follows. I am Erman, I was born in 1990 on one side of this divided island. The sad story of this island has started a long time before I was born and maybe it will continue for a longer time after I die. People like me have grown up with the hope of the peace in this divided island. In the schools, with our family and talks with friends, in the books that we read we have grown up with the fear of our ‘enemy’.

On the occasion of the international day of action for women's rights, a series of events were held in north Nicosia, culminating in a lively protest march stretching from Kyrenia Gate to Selimiye Mosque, with the participation of more than 20 organisations and independent groups. The main message of this year's protest was resistance to gender violence, and a call for women to reclaim public spaces such as roads and squares — a demand proven vital after Özgecan Aslan's murder last month in Turkey.

Pancyprian Student Coordination Committee (PSEM) in their latest press release call the government's decision to waive Pancyprian University Placement Exams fees for impoverished students a victory, and a recognition of the student movements' strikes last December and February, which at the time the Minister of Education called 'devoid of substance', and that was vilified by some media. PSEM criticises MinEdu for waiting until the second-to-last day of the inscription period to announce this measure.

Our intention is to foster a continued, horizontally organised forum that will reclaim what is rightfully ours: an island free of armies and the poisonous ideology they enforce on all...
